Audrey Rose is my beautiful three year old niece. My baby is unbelievable intelligent, kind, funny, beautiful inside and out, and a strong young one with fierce Blak Girl Magic. She calls me Meye, which means mum. Holding the title of Meye means so much to me. Our matriarchal lines continue to run strong. Our nieces and nephews are like our own. We watch over them, cry with them, bathe and feed them, and love like no other. It is our duty, our responsibility to do this. This piece represents the kinships systems that are often used in our communities. Through kinship lines your aunties are also your mothers, same goes with your uncles who are your fathers, and your cousins who become your brothers and sisters. On one side is my sister, who is my nieces biological or western way mother. On the other side is me, or all our beautiful aunties out there. We work together to raise our beautiful babies, which is represented in the middle. The background represents the land and community that raise all our children, because we must raise our young ones together. I think this is an incredible way of life, having multiple ma's, pa's and siblings. It is very complex and this is just a summary and have so much more to learn, but it means we are loved a million times over.
